Glin Rovers 3 – 0 Breska Rovers
Glin Rovers Ladies capped off a great season when they claimed the Division 1 League Cup on Sunday morning where they defeated Breska Rovers. With the morning providing perfect conditions for soccer the ladies got stuck in from the word go and put huge pressure on the Breska defence with Kate Sayers and Laura Hanlon causing a lot of trouble down the left and setting up Dymphna with two early chances. Glin’s early dominance payed off and after 8mins they went a goal ahead eventually scored by Maire Lyons, Dymphna O’Brien won the ball outside the box and hit a powerful shot that was saved by the keeper only for Kate Sayers to react quickest and send the ball across the goal line which was turned in by Maire Lyons to score her first goal of the season coming in a crucial time. With Glin now full of confidence, they continued to press forward putting serious pressure on the Breska defence, Laura Hanlon started up front but was dropping to wing to create opportunities for Dymphna and thus could have doubled the lead shortly after the goal but her effort could not get past the keeper who was in top form on the day. Then on the 15min Glin scored an all important crucial goal that left Breska with a mountain to climb. Dymphna went on a great run where she picked up the ball just inside the Breska half, she continued her run skipping past three defenders to find herself inside the box one on one with the keeper where she did on numerous occasions this season and like no other she placed the ball to the bottom corner to add to her tally for the season. This was a great individual goal with her quick gigs getting her past so many players. Glin sat back resting on there laurels but once they broke and caught Breska on the break they looked dangerous every time and could have put the game to bed early only for the keeper to pull of some great saves. Claire was brought into action shortly after the second goal but she was quick off her goal line to collect the ball to set up another attack for Glin who built from the back on a number of times with Ciara and Katie carrying the ball into mid-field where Sandra and Elaine sent through balls to their wingers and strikers. Mid way through the half Dymphna picked up play the near the end line and skipped past two defenders and passed to her sister but Sandra couldnt keep her effort on target and saw the ball fly over the bar. Dymphna could have have doubled her tally on a couple of occasions in the remainder of the first half where her efforts hit the post and cleared off the line. At half time Glin were in a great position to win the tie especially playing some great football. Glin continued to dominate the second half and it was once again the quick feet of Dymphna who lead the front line for Glin who continued to create opportunities for her incoming mid-fielders but on a couple of occasions they failed to put their efforts past the keeper. The defence of Denise Lyons, Ciara O’Grady, Katie Fitzgerald and Margaret Farrell were supherb on the day and like wise their mid-field of Maire Lyons, Elaine Fitzgerald, Sandra Healy and Kate Sayers who helped out there defence when needed of them and thus creating opportunities for Dymphna and Laura up front. Glin put the icing on the cake with 10mins to go when once again Dymphna was on the end of a great move to finish to the net and to hit the 30 mark for the number of goals she has scored in all competitions this season. On the final whistle there were great celebrations by the team who worked tirelessly since last August to finally claim sliverware. On behalf of Glin Rovers and everyone connected to the club i would like to congratulate the Ladies team and the management of Ivor McSweeney, Theresa Moloney and Johna Culhane who trained them in the early part of the season on this great win. Well done to all involved.
