Glin Rovers – B’s Cup Final

Richard Hogan Cup Final
Glin Rovers B 0 – 1 Abbeyfeale Utd B
Early goal decides Richard Hogan Cup Final.
The B’s faith in this cup decider was know after 8mins when the all important single goal was scored through a set piece. Abbeyfeale settled first and used their wingers to run at the Glin defence. Once Glin got a foot hold in the game Peader Mulvihill was holding up the ball for his strike partner Jack Costello who tried to take on the Abbeyfeale central defence best he could. Then on the 8 minute Abbeyfeale were awarded a free and sent in a dangerous high ball deep into the Glin defence where it was undealt with and finished up in the Glin net. Abbeyfeale had the momentum and pushed forward on numerous occasions in the first half in search of a second but the defence of Oakley Costello, Joe Stack, Sean and Olly Mulvihill held out to clear the danger thus preventing Abbeyfeale getting a strike on goal. Mid-way through the first half Barclay Costello entered the game for Peader where himself and Jack looked for openings in the Abbeyfeale defence in search of shot on goal but failed on a couple occasions. With Abbeyfeale defence on top of their game it was the Glin Mid-field of Aidan Mulvihill, Michael Sweeney, Ger Lyons and David O’Sullivan who were getting stuck into their counterparts and setting up there strikers with opportunities. Michael and Ger worked immensely in the middle of the park through out the game especially winning the aerial battles. At half time Glin knew they had to up their performance in order to create chances in search of the equaliser and that they did, it was a half that would have won many a game for them. They felt fresh legs were needed and on came Pa Killeen to take up the left wing position with Aidan Mulvihill reverting back to left back where he looked comfortable through out the second half. They got stuck into action from the word go with Barclay Costello once again putting in a great performance, on numerous occasions in the second half he ran at the Abbeyfeale defence winning throws and corner kicks. Glin came close to equalising 12mins into the second half when Barclay’s powerful header met the in swinging Joe Stack corner but crept over the cross bar. With Glin dominating in the middle of the park they were giving away little space to their counterparts and mid way through the half Sean Mulvihill went on a great solo run where it eventually ended up with Ger Lyons coming close to scoring from a header which he could not beat the keeper with. Pa Killeen came close to scoring from another corner but his header was saved on the goal line and thus the danger cleared. With Glin playing all the ball in the Abbeyfeale half, on a couple of occasions they tried to catch Glin down the wings but Olly and Aidan Mulvihill saw clear of the danger each time. With 10mins remaining Abbeyfeale came close to putting the game away but Bill got down to save the incoming shot. With time running out for Glin, they reverted to three up top with Sean Lyons entering the fray. Sean got stuck into the action winning the ball and holding it up for Barclay and Jack to run at the defence. Through out the half Glin won many throw in’s which felt like corner kicks due to Pa Killeen getting great distance from the throws firing the ball into the Abbeyfeale box on each occasion. With time almost up quite possibly their best opportunity came when a through ball wasn’t dealt with by their keeper and with the ball at the feet of David O’Sullivan, his shot could not make it’s way through the congested defence and it was cleared before Ger Lyons could pressurise the defender . It was a great second half performance by the team and if they had a bit of luck they could have easily carried the tie to extra time. All in all it was great seen them contest the Hogan Cup final and hopefully they will be back in Clounreask before the season is concluded.
