West Intemediate C’Ship QF
Gerald Griffins 1-9
Our first season as an intermediate team since 2007 began in Foynes last Saturday with the neighbours Gerald Griffins providing the opposition in the quarter final of the West Intermediate Championship. Missing a few regulars it was nevertheless an enthralling contest which ebbed and flowed in both directions throughout the 60 minutes.
It was nip and tuck right from the start with each side trading early scores. Pádraig Scanlon and Kevin Moore were on target with some fine efforts from play and frees during the first half. Pádraig Costello, playing in the unfamiliar position of midfield, marauded forward on many occasions and was rewarded with a well taken point. We were unlucky to concede a goal in the 20th minute when a blocked shot ricocheted off a Glin leg and into the hands of the Gerald Griffin’s full forward, who struck for goal.
The second half was another very tight affair where scores were at a premium. A key moment came in the 40th minute when a wonderful move from the back culminated in a well taken goal from a tight angle by midfielder Paul Sheahan. By now our forwards were starting to get on top with Scanlon and Moore again raising white flags, ably assisted by Darren Sheahan at centre forward. Our defensive unit especially Kevin Sweeney, Tim Scanlon and Michael Stack in goals were solid throughout but as the clock ticked down, it was all square. Facing extra time, Glin launched one final attack. Seán Lyons executed a fantastic 40 yard kick pass into the chest of Kevin Moore and when the forward was fouled Pádraig Scanlon knocked over the free which prove to be the decisive score. It was a brilliant performance by the Glin lads but they know that Gerald Griffin’s will be keenly looking to avenge this defeat when we meet again this Friday in the County League.
