West Junior B League
We faced near neighbours Athea in the first round of the West Junior B League in Páirc Uí Chathaláin last Friday evening.
We started well with Michéal Sheehy providing the opening point with a fine effort from 25 yards out. Aidan Mulvihill then added another point after a fine run through the defence. In the 15th minute, Sheehy scored his second point before Athea kicked their first points of the game. Around the 20th minute mark, midfielder Shane Culhane slotted over his first point. However, as the half drew to a close, Athea got back into it with a goal against the run of play, and also profited from some handy free kicks.
It was nip and tuck all the way through the second half, with scores at a premium. Shane Culhane made the most of his possessions around the middle of the field throughout the half and in the 42 minute delivered a fine long ball into Mulvihill who pivoted to score a point. Our backs, especially Geoghegan, Lyons and O’Sullivan were tenacious in defence, getting out first to every ball during the half. In the 47th minute David Horan got his fist to a high ball into the square to raise a white flag. Athea always kept in touch and we were never more than a single score ahead. Culhane then added 2 more points as we approached the 55th minute. However as the game entered the final few minutes, Athea were awarded a penalty for a questionable foul in the square which they converted. At this stage we were a point down but in fairness to our lads, we went back up the field, worked the ball into a scoring position and Culhane struck over the equaliser. However, it wasn’t to be as Athea responded with the winning point just before the final whistle. It was a disappointing defeat in a game we deserved to get something out of, but with two more group games against Gerald Griffins and Mountcollins remaining, it’s still all to play for.
