Vocations – Excerpt from Letter from Cathedral House: We are all aware of the urgent need to foster vocations to the priesthood and religious life. We are not longer living in a time of transition – that would be far too mild a description of what is taking place in the Church and in our society at present. In many ways the ‘old order’ has been turned upside down and it would be easy to succumb to a spirit of despondency and feel that there is little we can do to reverse the trend. However, as a people of hope who trust in the power of the Spirit and its unfailing presence in our midst we believe that ‘the Spirit blows where it will’ – let us accompany it in whatever direction it is taking us. There are signs of hope that the Spirit is stirring the waters – at the moment three people appear to be hearing the call and may accept the challenge to begin the journey. Data to ponder:
- There are 60 parishes in the Diocese of Limerick.
- At present approximately 70 diocesan priests are involved in active ministry in the diocese.
- In 10 years’ time there will be less than 50 priests involved in active ministry in the diocese.
- At present a number of parishes do not have a resident priest: others do not have a resident parish priest.
If each parish in the Diocese could produce one priest from its community every 25 years, it would be more than enough to fulfil the needs of the Diocese. On Vocation’s Sunday 26th April, Sacred Space 102fm will broadcast an interview with Aiden O’Rourke, our diocesan clerical student at 10.00 a.m. and again at 11.00 a.m. The interview will also be available as a Podcast on our blog at http://www.sacredspace102.blogspot.com
