DESMOND CUP SEMI FINAL
GLIN ROVERS B V RATHKEALE B
Glin Rovers B came within a whisker of contesting a Desmond Cup Final this season, They went head to head with Rathkeale B on Saturday night in Clonreask in what was a very tense encounter. Having already contested the Hogan Cup final only to lose out on Penalties following a 1-1 draw after Extra time Glin Rovers B were well up for this game.
Glin Rovers B lined out as follows: Sean Lyons, Oakley Costello, Ger Lyons, Sean Mulvihill, Stephen Barrett, David O Sullivan, Olly Wallce, Barclay Costello, Fergal Fitzgerald, Ger Riordan and Jack Costello.
Squad: Aidan Mulvihill, Shane McInerney, Edward Mulvihill, Pa Killeen, Peadair Mulvihill, Patrick O Shaughnessy, Michael Sheehy.
The first chance of the game fell to Rathkeale from a corner kick on 5 minutes, Olly Wallace on hand as ever with a powerful header clear. On 6 Minutes Rathkeale threatened again but Sean Lyons was alert in goal and secured the shot. The first 10 minutes was very much Rathkeales, they were using a long ball tactic to see if they could get in behind our defence but Ger Lyons and Sean Mulvihill were having none of it and started the game well for us. Sean Lyons had to make a good save on 13 minutes form a Rathkeale Shot from outside the box. Oakley Costello started the game very well, Rathkeale were coming down his wing in the early exchanges and he made some strong challenges in keep them out. David O sullivan made one great after winning a Rathkeale corner he sped 20 yards in to Rathkeale territory only to be foulded as he was sure to play in Ger Riordan. David O Sullivan (Capt) made a fierce burst in to Rathkeale territiry on 24 minutes going past 3 Rathkeale players on his way toward their box but one of the defenders managed to thwart his attempted shot on goal and clear the danger. Barclay Costello made a great tackle down the left wing on 28 minutes to prevent his man getting past him with acres of ground behind Barclay. They would have had 2 players in good positions only for Barclays tackle clearing the danger. Rathkeale must have had 12 corners in the first half and every one of them fell to a Glin player, if it wasnt Ger Lyons clearing with a header it was Olly Wallace or Sean Mulvihill. Rathkeale should have scored on 44 minutes, a dangerous inswinging cross from the right wing nearly found the foot of a diving Rathkeale player but thankfully it went just wide. Half time arrived and the score was 0-0. A though first half with Rathkeale having most of the possession only to find Glin Rovers B in no mood to concede a goal early. The Defence of Oakly, Ger, Sean and Stephen were playing very well as was Fergal Fitzgerlad. His display in the first half was very gritty and he went in for several heavy challenges without hesitation, a good defensive midfielder to say the very least. Olly Wallace was doing very well in the air and he was frustrating the Rathkeale players by blocking them in midfield alongside Barclay. David O Sullivan was our most dangerous attacking player in the first half as Jack Costello and Ger Riordan unfortunately did not see much of the ball in the forward area as Rathkeale were dominating possession. Ger and Jack spend most of the first half anchored in Midfield. That would change in the second half though.
When the second half commenced Glin Rovers B immediately uped the ante and piled the pressure back on Rathkeale. Great work by Ger Riordan down the left wing resulted in a Glin Corner, O Sullivans corner fell to Ger inside the 6 yard box but he shot the ball just over the crossbar, it was a good chance and spurred Ger on to have a fine game. Six minutes in to the second half we were so unlucky not to make it 1-0. David O Sullivan made a great run into the box and his shot was blocked by a rathleale player. Olly took a shot from the deflection but his shot was blocked at close range and then Ger Riordans shot went inches over the Stephen Barrett came more in to the game in the second half as Rathkeale began to press down his wing. 8 Minutes in he took a clever throw in which Got Ger Riordan away down the wing and in towards goal, The Keeper made a good save from Ger’s shot. Ger Lyons almost got Jack Costello in on goal on 53 minutes when he burst in to the Rathkeale area and managed to cut the ball to Jack at the right time. Jack’s shot was blocked for a corner. Stephen Barrett made a good interception as the expence of a corner when a Rathkeale player shot on goal. Ger Riordan was terrorising the Rathkeale defense and he made a great run on 55 minutes but his shot was cleared for a corner. Sean Mulvihill showed his experience on 58 minutes when he made a vital tackle inside the box as a Rathkeale player was in on goal. Ger Lyons made a good tackle just after the corner and got Olly clear, he passed to Ger with a great ball that split the entire Rathkeale midfield. Ger’s shot just went a fraction wide of the post. We lost Barclay soon after when he got a second yellow card. On 60 Minutes Ger Riordan played David O Sullivan in on goal and he switched the ball to Olly, The Keeper made a good save from Olly’s shot. Rathkeale came in to the game a little more after 70 minutes and began to trouble Glin again, Jack Costello was helping out in midfield a lot toward the end of normal time as Rathkeale came more in to the game. Pa Killeen came on for David O Sullivan toward the end of normal time. Sean Lyons had to make a good save on 85 minutes at his left hand post from a dangerous shot. Extra time would be needed for this match as the referee blew his whistle for the end of normal time.
Rathkeale had the first shot in anger of extra time but Sean Lyons plucked the ball from just under his crossbar on 3 minutes. Oakley Costello was really putting in the tackles tonight, I would say it was between himself and Fergal Fitzgerald for the most tacke count tonight, they both had very good games. Neither side had another chance in the first half on ET. Sean Mulvihill made a massive interception inside the box just inside the first minute of the Second half at the expence of throw. Shane McInerney came on for Jack Costello and he almost made an immediate impact. He won the ball in midfield and then hit a great ball in over the top of the Rathkeale cover but before Olly could get to the ball a Rathkeale player cleared the danger with a header. 7 Minutes in to the second half Rathleale hit Glin with a goal to take the lead. A Rathkeale player crossed the ball in to the penalty area and found the head of a team mate who managed to head a fine header in to the top corner of the net. It was an awful blow. Aidan Mulvihill came on for Fergal Fitzgerald after that to try and give a bit more speed down the left hand side of midfield. Rathkeale however struck again with a minute remaining when they scored a well worked goal from the left hand wing, their striker managed to get in to the box and hit a low shot in to the Glin net. A Place in the Desmond Cup final was so close for Glin Rovers B this season. There was nothing between the sides tonight, 2-0 was a harsh score line to have to come away from Clonreask with. Glin Rovers B have had a tremoundous season thus far. The effort they put in to this game typifies the spirit that is in the squad. They took the winners of Division 2 to penalites in the Hogan Cup final this season and so nearly overcame the Division 1 League Cup winners and Probably the Winners of Division 1 league also in the Desmond Cup Semi final. They will shortly contest the Division 3 League Cup Final and we wish them the very best of luck in that game.
