West Junior B League

Glin 3-7

Gerald Griffins 0-8

We faced the men from Gerald Griffins in our final West League game knowing  that victory would be needed if we were to progress into the semi-final stage of the competition. It was a tight first half with our opponents causing us problems and scoring some early frees. However, Alan O’Donovan replied with a well taken goal in the 15th minute after some neat interplay by our forwards. He followed up with a fine right footed point shortly afterwards. Gerald Griffins could have had a goal of their own but David Killeen pulled off two fantastic saves to keep them out before half time. The defensive duo of Edward and Ollie Mulvihill also played their part in restricting Gerald Griffins to just 0-4 points during the half. Just before the break, David Horan reacted quickest to a breaking ball to score another goal, leaving us with a lead of 3 points at the break.

It was in the second period we really took control of the contest. Patrick Killeen really stood out and the three outstanding long range points he scored in the opening 15 minutes were a joy to behold. Pádraig Horan then got in on the action, finishing off a great solo run with a 40 yard outside of the boot point from the right hand side. Killeen and David Horan added another point each before the James McSweeney marked his return to the side with a traditional full forward’s goal, punching the ball over the onrushing goalkeeper. Great credit is due to all the players for their efforts in this must-win encounter and we now face Ballysteen in the West League semi-final in the upcoming weeks.
