Intermediate C’Ship

Glin 0-8

Mungret 0-9

Our third intermediate championship game of the year was a crucial encounter with Mungret at Askeaton last Friday evening. We started well, with Kevin Moore fielding a fine pass before beating his man and slotting over the bar for the opening score. However, Mungret really took hold of the game and scored six unanswered points over the next 20 minutes. We replied with two fine long range frees by Moore and another point from Mark Culhane. Moore kicked his fourth point just before half time to leave the score 0-6 to 0-5 in Mungret’s favour.

The second half was nip and tuck throughout with our opponents grabbing two early points. Michael Sweeney kicked over a fine point before player-manager Patrick Madigan added a great point of his own. Sweeney won a wonderful ball in midfield which ended up with Mark Culhane notching his second point of the game. With the sides now level and only minutes remaining, unfortunately, it was the men in red who scored the winning point. Final score Glin 0-8 Mungret 0-9.

Junior B West C’Ship

Glin 1-7

Ballysteen 1-5

After a disappointing opening championship defeat to Athea, we needed a good performance against Ballysteen, and the boys in black and white delivered one of the best Junior B performances seen in recent years.

Right from the off, we took the game to Ballysteen ,with Gary Culhane latching onto an accurate Michéal Sheehy pass to kick the opening score of the game. Sheehy then scored another point minutes later but unfortunately he injured himself in the process and had to be replaced by James McSweeney. Ballysteen scored two frees to draw themselves level by the 25thminute before Gary Culhane convert a fine free from a tight angle. Just afterwards, Bill Culhane won a great ball in defence and released Pa Killeen into space. The midfielder went on a 70 yard solo run before popping the ball to Gary who scored his 3rd point. Our backs were superb throughout, with Joe Stack, Joe Culhane, David Sullivan and Seán Lyons having fine games and we restricted Ballysteen to just one more point before the interval.

The second half began as the first with Gary Culhane scoring another fine free to extend our lead to 2 points. The key moment of the game occurred in the 38th minute when Ger Riordan set off on a defence splitting solo run. He passed the ball inside to Stephen Barrett who’s shot from 15 yards out found the bottom corner of the net. We were in the ascendancy now, and experienced forward Peadar Mulvihill scored a fine point from 25 yards out two minutes later. We now led by 6 points but Ballysteen really put it up to us in the final quarter. Our defensive effort during this period was fantastic. Starting with the forwards, McSweeney and Fitzgerald helped out their backs by hassling and harrying the Ballysteen men in possession. Tadhg Culhane and Pa Killeen in midfield, soldiered up and down all day making the most of the possession they had. Our opponents finally got a fortunate goal in the 50th minute but were it not for a great diving save by goalkeeper David Killeen minutes afterwards, we would have been in serious trouble. As the game entered its dying stages, we won a sideline ball on the 13 yard line out on the right hand side. Gary Culhane stepped up and swerved the ball over the bar with the outside of his right foot. It was an outstanding score which was a fitting end to an outstanding performance by the Glin team. Great credit is due to the players and management for their efforts. With all four teams in the group, Glin, Athea, St. Kieran’s and Ballysteen, tied on 2 points after 2 games it’s really all to play for. We are down to play St. Kieran’s in the final group game on the weekend of July 3rd-5th.

Team: D. Killeen, J. Culhane, S. Lyons, J. Stack, S. Barrett (1-0), D. Sullivan, B. Culhane, P. Killeen, T. Culhane, A. O’Donovan, G. Culhane (0-5), M. Sheehy (0-1), P. Mulvihill (0-1), F. Fitzgerald, G. Riordan. Sub: J. McSweeney for M. Sheehy
