GB Rovers 4 Ferry Rangers 3
On Saturday afternoon last we began our U14 soccer season in glorious sunshine in Ballyhahill. The pitch was in pristine condition with one supporter saying it was as good as Old Trafford and the game itself was just as good. GB Rovers began the game on the attack and for the first 5 minutes they were in control. During that 5 minute period our best chance fell to Dylan O’Shea. Following an exchange of passes on the left between Paudie Griffin and Padraic O’Connor the ball was delivered into the box and Dylan O’Shea hit it first time but the ball cannoned off the Ferry defender on the line and was cleared. Ferry Rangers began to come more into the game and for the next 20 minutes they took control but the GB Rovers defence of Hugh O’Donnell, Gearoid Woulfe, Conor Shine and Adam Robb stood up to the challenge. The deadlock was finally broken on 25 minutes when a Ferry Rangers free kick from there own half was put in behind our defensive line for their attacked to run onto. Sean Adams came out to narrow the angle but the Ferry player shot low to Sean’s left and into the net. One nil to Ferry. The GB management team made a change after this with Zach Behan dropping into the back four and Donagh McEnery coming into midfield. This change seemed to steady the team and slowly we came back at Ferry. Five minutes before half time we were level. Paul O’Donnell won a header in midfield from a Ferry Rangers kick out and directed it out left for Ajay Behan to run onto and he made no mistake hitting the ball across the keeper and into the far corner. One all and that was the half time score. The second half began very even with both sides playing some lovely football. Ferry Rangers were using the wings but our two full backs, Hugh O’Donnell and Adam Robb were excellent in the tackle and stopped every attack and when they came through the middle Conor Shine and Zach Behan mopped everything up. Fifteen minutes into the second half Ferry Rangers took the lead again. They got a corner from the right and when the ball was delivered into the penalty area both GB Rovers heads and Ferry rangers heads went up for the ball but unfortunately it was the head of a Ferry Rangers player that met the ball giving Sean Adams in goal no chance. Two one to Ferry. Five minutes later and GB Rovers won a free kick 35 yards from goal. Up stepped Paul O’Donnell and hit a wonderful free kick into the keepers top left corner giving him no chance. Two all. GB Rovers were now starting to play some great football and dominate midfield. Ajay Behan brought a wonderful one handed save from the Ferry keeper to keep the game level. Following a corner Paudie Griffin, Donagh McEnery and Zach Behan all had their goal bound shots from inside the penalty area blocked down and eventually the Ferry defence cleared their lines. Four minutes to go and GB Rovers took the lead for the first time in the match. Ferry Rangers attacked down the right but Hugh O’Donnell forced the Ferry midfielder in field where he was tackled by Zach Behan. Zach Behan won the ball and played a quick through ball to Ajay Behan. Ajay Behan held off the challenge of the Ferry defender and from 15 yards hit a powerful low ball to the keepers left and into the net. Three two to GB Rovers. Our lead was short lived as two minutes later Ferry Rangers won a free kick inside our half. The Ferry midfielder drove a long high ball into the GB Rovers goal mouth and Sean Adams did well to palm the ball away and prevent the ball going into the net but unfortunately the ball fell to an inrushing Ferry player and he bundled the ball into the net. Three all and only two minute left, but GB Rovers were not giving up. Killian McDonagh won a great header in midfield and the ball fell to Donagh McEnery who controlled it and advanced towards the penalty area. He passed it out to the left to Padraic O’Connor who drove it across the six yard box. The Ferry defender cut out the cross but delayed a split second in clearing it which gave Ajay Behan enough time to rob him of the ball and score. The full time whistle sounded shortly after and GB Rovers were triumphant. This was great game of football played in excellent conditions and a great way to start the season. Team; Sean Adams, Hugh O’Donnell, Conor Shine, Adam Robb, Gearoid Woulfe, Dylan O’Shea, Zach Behan, Paul O’Donnell, Paudie Griffin, Padraic O’Connor, Ajay Behan, Donagh McEnery, Killian McDonagh, Ciaran McNamara, Martin McNamara, Michael O’Shea, Elijah Behan, Arron Murphy and Daragh Murphy.
