Intermediate QF Playoff

Glin 1-12

Athea 1-10

After suffering defeat to Mungret in the 1st playoff in Rathkeale last Tuesday night, it was winner-take-all, in Abbeyfeale last Sunday afternoon.

We started very slowly, with Athea causing most of the damage in the first 30 minutes, with the only bright sparks being a brace from Paul Sheahan and a fine left footed effort from Brendan Flanagan which capped off a incisive Glin move. At half time, the outlook was bleak, with our boys trailing 1-6 to 0-4. The second half was a great improvement with opening points from Pádraig Scanlon and Paul Sheahan, cutting the margin to a single goal. Athea pushed ahead with two points of their own, before Paul Sheahan cut through the defence and finished with aplomb to the back of the net. His brother Darren then got in on the action with two raised white flags, the second coming from nice intricate build up play from the Wallace brothers. Paul and Gary Culhane fired over two further points around the 50th minute but we couldn’t shake off Athea who had clawed their way back level 1-10 apiece as we entered into injury time.

The referee awarded us a free 40 yards out on the left hand side and Scanlon struck it sweetly over the bar to put us a point ahead. Our defence held tough in the closing minute and on the break, Jack Sheehan hit a wonderful cross field ball into Ger Lyons who laid it off to Darren Sheahan for the insurance score. Full time: Glin 1-12 Athea 1-10. This was a wonderful team performance from Glin, especially when the chips were down, with our young lads really stepping up and the experienced players coming off the bench to see out the game. It has been a rollercoaster week for the lads with 3 matches in 7 days but finally after four years in the intermediate grade, we’re into a quarter final against Galbally, this Saturday at 3pm in Feenagh.

Team: Seán Lyons, Jamie Fitzgerald, Brian O’Donovan, Maurice Moore, John Wallace, Pádraig Costello, Jack Sheehan, Ronan Culhane, Paul Sheehan (1-4), Shane Culhane, Darren Sheahan (0-3), Brendan Flanagan (0-1), Pádraig Scanlon (0-3), Gary Culhane (0-1), James Wallace, Subs used: Ger Lyons, Paddy Fitzgerald, Tadhg Culhane, Edmond Horan.
