Intermediate Quarter Final
Our run in this year’s championship came to an end in Feenagh last Saturday afternoon. We went toe to toe with Galbally for most of the first half with some fine teamwork and incisive passing which created many scores. We were fortunate also that Seán Lyons was in fine form, saving two goal bound shots in the opening 20 minutes. Paddy Fitzgerald was marshalling the backs well from his sweeper role, with midfield and forwards functioning well together, which culminated in points for Pádraig Scanlon, Paul and Darren Sheahan and James Wallace. Half time: Glin 0-7 Galbally 0-11. Unfortunately, we never got going in the second half. As the gap widened, our play and discipline became more ragged, with our sole score being a point by Scanlon. Galbally were the better team and deserve their place in the semi final.
Despite this defeat, our lads can take a lot of heart from this season. We won four championship games against Bruff, Athea, Mungret and Claughan, and reached the quarter finals for the first time since coming up intermediate in 2015. There is a crop of young minor and U21s who have experience of winning titles with Shannon Gaels, who made their mark on this year’s championship. There were some superb passages of play and outstanding score taking in all of this year’s matches. With the potential return of a few exiles next year, 2019 is a season that the Estuary men will look forward to with great interest. The club would like to thank all the players and the management team of Colm Hassett, Pádraig Hogan, Gaven O’Connor and James O’Donovan for their efforts this year.
