Glin Development and Tidy Towns

Leader Rural Development Programme 2020 /Protection and Sustainable use of Water Resources

A recent initiative between West Limerick Resources and Glin Development and Tidy Towns has been successful and Glin has been awarded funding for the purchase and installation of Water Butts in the Glin community.  The initiative is to support the protection of our most natural resource, water.  Collecting rain water has many benefits to the environment:

  • Demand on water supply is reduced
  • Improved water supply and less pressure on the network
  • Helps conserve treated water and protects the environment
  • Water your garden with a store of free rainwater
  • Cost effective and eco friendly

The number of Water Butts is limited.  If you are interested in having one installed in your home, please ring Marie on 086 8691821.

While the Water Butts (210 L) are being given for free, we are asking for a nominal installation fee of €20.  The Glin Development and Tidy Towns will follow up with participants in due course to get feedback on their experience with the Water Butts and the benefits that have been gained from its use.

GLIN TIDY TOWNS: The Tidy Towns volunteers have started back on Wednesday evenings.  There are lots of areas that need a good dose of TLC!  It is hoped a lot will be covered over the summer months.  Most of the work consists of weeding, painting, litter picking and general upkeep and watering of the planted beds in the village.  Tidy Towns welcome new members, and will be delighted with any extra help.

Tidy Towns meet up on Wednesday evening from 7 PM.  The meeting place is normally the Town Park, and from there we decide on jobs/areas that need tackling.  Social distance is always maintained and high vis are always worn.  Glin Development and Tidy Towns would like to give a big shout out to all the participants on the RSS and the TUS schemes.   They all do fantastic work around the village and on the Heritage Trails, keeping the village and its amenities in fantastic shape.  It is very reassuring to see them back after the lockdown, as we know our village and walks are being well maintained and in tip top shape.  Thanks also to our Tidy Towns volunteers who are working on our behalf every day. Willie Wall, for one, can be seen every day keeping the town spick and span.  Thank you to Willie and all our volunteers who are constantly working behind the scenes every day.  Pride of Place is a wonderful thing!  New flower beds were recently installed on the N69 Pier Road entrance to Glin coming from the Loughill side. A lot of work was put into the planning and laying out of these flower beds.  Glin Development wish to sincerely thank Joe Martin for his contribution for all this work and indeed for his contribution to the Tidy Town activities over the past few months.  He has done a lot of work in maintaining the Glin Heritage Trails, and especially, The Knights Walk.  Joe has done all this work on a voluntary basis and we thank him on behalf of the entire community.  He is also the first man to arrive annually for the TLC clean ups.  He fills numerous bags of litter and discarded household rubbish from the ditches and road sides of Glin.  Thank you, Joe.

Glin Knights Walk: The construction of the Viewing Platform is well under way at the summit of the Knight Walk.  It will be a solid construction when it is completed, and a well-earned stop gap to take a photo of the stunning views and for a breather for walkers!  Thank you to everyone who has contributed to the go fund me initiative.  These funds are being used for all the maintenance and up keep of the Knights Walk and the Glin Heritage Trails and other initiatives throughout the village.  https://gf.me/u/y9xyxz     Glin has become a very popular destination for walkers and visitors, and it is great to see so many enjoying all the facilities Glin has to offer.  Let’s hope we get a good summer of sunshine and a glimmer of hope as we come out of lockdown.  Keep up to date – visit the Glin Tidy Towns FB Page and the Glin.info website page.  Congratulations:Great news for two G.B Rover FC players; Dylan Buckley and Luke Costello who have both been requested to attend Tralee Emerging Talent Programme (ETP) The boys will attend 12 sessions in June, July and August. Well done boys.

Fantastic news: for former G.B Rovers F.C player Cillian Mulvihill who is 1 of the 22 selected to train at the 3 day U16 camp in Athlone. A tremendous opportunity, well done Cillian – great international recognition. Keep up the great work.
