West Junior B League

Glin 2-7

Mountcollins 3-2

It was a cold and crisp evening at Páirc Uí Chathaláin last Thursday evening when our Junior B side played their opening game of the season. Gary Culhane opened the scoring in the 8th minute with a fine curling right foot effort from play and that was quickly followed up by Micheál Sheehy, who rolled back the years to slot over a tremendous score. After that, Philip Moloney cut through the defence from midfield to shoot a fine point. We were well in control at this stage but were not able to make it count on the scoreboard. Mountcollins, to their credit, hung in there, and were rewarded with a goal just before halftime. At the break, the score was Glin 0-3, Mountcollins 1-0.

We made a few changes at half time. Paul Sheahan came on and made an immediate impact with two points, the second an outrageous effort from way out on the right hand side which curled high over the black spot. James MacSweeney then struck for a fine goal on the 40th minute mark which put some breathing space between the teams. Ger Lyons then increased our lead with a free and followed it up with an expertly taken goal. Our defence continued to play well throughout this period, thwarting many opposition advances and setting up scores for our forwards and Tadhg Culhane strode up from wing back to kick a great point from the tightest of angles. Ger Lyons kicked over our final score of the day in the 53 minute. Mountcollins never gave up and got a few late scores to narrow the gap but we held out for a well deserved victory. It finished Glin 2-7 Mountcollins 3-2. Best for Glin were Hugh Dunne, Tadhg Culhane, Gary Culhane and Maurice Fitzgerald. Fair play to all the lads who togged out, especially Micheál Sheehy, who travelled a great distance to be there.
