Estuary Swim for St. Gabriel’s this Summer: Limerick based charity St. Gabriel’s Foundation is delighted to be the nominated charity of the Glin Estuary Swim this July. Swimmers will take on the mighty Shannon and swim from Coleman’s Castle, Labasheeda, Co. Clare to Glin Pier on Saturday July 13th. Swimmers can register their interest and get a sponsorship card from Swim Organiser Maria Geoghegan by emailing geoghegan.maria@yahoo.com.
“We have been running the swim for over 20 years and we are delighted to be able to do it again this year and for such a worthy cause. Swimmers are taken over to the banner county by the boat crews and swim back before the tide changes. Swimmers can wear skins or a wetsuit and can do any stroke they like. It’s a challenging swim but safety is our priority and we are very grateful to the support we receive from the local community and the Foynes Search and Rescue who look after everyone so well on the day.” St Gabriel’s Foundation is based in Limerick and provides services for children with disabilities in the Mid-west region. Funds raised for the Estuary Swim will go towards St. Gabriel’s Children’s Respite House in Mungret where children with complex medical needs receive overnight nurse-led respite care. Before this service was opened in 2021, families would have to travel to Dublin to avail of this service. Kate Finucane from St Gabriel’s is delighted that St. Gabriel’s will benefit from the swim this year, “We support over 2,000 children within the Midwest. As we all know, disability services can’t provide enough services for their children. St Gabriel’s is always striving to provide additional supports for the families and fundraisers like this one will help us meet the needs of the families we are working with to deliver services to families on their doorstep, so that they do not have to travel outside of Limerick to receive them.” Established in 1961, St. Gabriel’s Foundation is a not-for-profit and registered charity with its main headquarters located in Dooradoyle. The whole ethos of St. Gabriel’s is to improve the lives of people living with disabilities, helping them to reach their full potential and to support their families at the same time. St. Gabriel’s meets these needs through the provision of clinical therapies, education, respite, orthotics and hydrotherapy. The charity runs 2 of the 7 Children’s Disability Network Teams in the Mid-West region and close to 40,000 people avail of our services every year. St. Gabriel’s Hydrotherapy Pool and Orthotics Clinic operate as Social Enterprises, so the whole community can avail of these world-class services right on their doorstep.
